SLS in shampoo: the whole formula
SLS is a cleansing ingredient. For shampoo, the rinse is part of the information.
Sodium lauryl sulfate, SLS, is often discussed as a one-word verdict. A more useful start is the kind of product, the whole formula and how long it stays on the skin or scalp. In a shampoo, cleansing is followed by rinsing.
Cosmetic Ingredient Review’s December 2025 reference table describes SLS as suitable in formulas intended for brief, intermittent contact followed by thorough rinsing. It treats prolonged skin contact differently. The table is the CIR SLS PDF. This site does not describe a “high risk” percentage. Dr. M Hokkaido Kelp Shampoo keeps SLS low, at ≤5%, in that shampoo only.
If avoiding SLS matters to you, read the current ingredient list or ask for a label photo. “Please send the full ingredient list” is a clearer question than “Is it chemical-free?” For this shampoo: wet hair and scalp, gentle massage through the 2–3 minute wash, thorough rinse. Do not leave a rinse-off product on longer than directed. If you have a known ingredient allergy or a scalp condition, take the label to a qualified professional. An article cannot decide suitability for you.
