Hokkaido kelp in hair care
The marine ingredient in the shampoo story, and what a skin-cream study can and cannot tell you.
According to the product materials, the kelp in Dr. M Hokkaido Kelp Hair & Scalp Shampoo (NOT220504152K) is sourced from Hokkaido, Japan. The product is a shampoo: wet, massage, rinse.
In a 2013 study, Choi and colleagues looked at seaweed extracts in moisturising creams on human forearm skin. A cream containing Laminaria japonica extract showed hydration-related findings under those study conditions. The abstract is PubMed 23752034. The experiment used a leave-on skin cream. It was not a test of this shampoo.
A cream left on skin and a shampoo rinsed from hair are different routines. Ask whether the researchers tested the bottle you are buying. If they did not, the paper can stay background reading.
The shampoo is formulated without mineral oil, silicone and parabens. Those are statements about this shampoo, not a ranking of every other product. The wash itself is: apply to wet hair and scalp, massage gently, keep the 2–3 minute wash step, rinse with lukewarm water, towel-dry, and use a cool or medium dryer if needed. One bottle is RM139, alone or in a mix-and-match bundle.
