When to speak to a doctor about a scalp or hair concern

By Dr. M Hair Care · 1 October 2026 · 3 min read

You do not have to wait until a change looks dramatic.

If a change worries you, that is a reasonable reason to speak to a doctor. You do not need a long list of products first. Tell them about discomfort, pain, itching, scaling, a sudden change, or anything that is not settling. Those details are context. They are not a diagnosis by themselves.

A short note helps: when it started, whether it has changed, the area, scalp symptoms, recent illness, surgery, childbirth or other changes you want to mention, and the names of products, medicines and supplements. Photos you already have can help. Do not delay the visit in order to build a large album.

Ask what the doctor thinks is happening, how sure that is, whether tests or a referral are needed, what the next step involves, and which changes should make you call again. Bring label photos. This page does not diagnose a condition or recommend a treatment.
