After childbirth: if a hair change worries you

By Dr. M Hair Care · 1 October 2026 · 3 min read

An article cannot explain one person’s change. A clinician can listen to the actual story.

Noticing more hair in the shower after having a baby can be upsetting, especially when the rest of the day has already changed. You can ask questions without buying a treatment first. An online page cannot decide the reason for your change.

Write when you noticed it and what you see. Note when you gave birth, when the change began, whether it seems general or in one area, any scalp symptoms, and which medicines, supplements and hair products you use. Say if you are breastfeeding or planning another pregnancy. A short list is enough.

Speak to your usual clinician if you are worried, if the change feels unusual, if there are distinct patches, or if the scalp is uncomfortable. Say how it is affecting you. You do not have to wait for a particular month. There is no timeline on this page, because this page cannot promise one.

Keep daily care small enough to fit around feeding and rest. Put the towel and the products you already use in one place. Do not add several unfamiliar products at once. Do not start a medicine, including during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, without your clinician. A cosmetic product is not automatically suitable then, even if an ingredient sounds familiar. Bring the current label. This page does not explain your situation or the safety of a particular product for you.
